Custom 9x9 portrait

A wonderful Momma recently asked me to paint her son, daughters, nieces and nephews for her as a series of 8x10 and 9x9 paintings. I just finished one of them, and am almost done with 2 others. Here is a little sneak peek:

Doesn't she look like a sweet little elf?

Two little ACEO paintings - Fairy of Lily of the Valley and Daffodils

A client recently asked me to paint more ACEOs of the Fairy of Lily of the Valley and Daffodils. I had a little room in the margins of another painting, so here you go:

9x12 watercolor - Bath in a Bucket

I just finished another painting for my watercolor class. The challenge was to create a glowing effect by painting with pure colors (yellow, magenta, cyan blue). I also wanted this painting to be pretty high key, and I decided to leave the edges of the hair fairly undefined. I kind of like the effect.

Bath in a Bucket
The picture I painted from was an old photograph of little 3-year-old Me, taking a bath in a bucket when we lived in India. Did you know that I lived in India for a while when I was little?

Detail view - I still need to tweak the eyes a little.
I learned so much in my class. I am sad that it is over, but the next one begins in just 3 weeks! In the course of the next class session I want to combine the painting techniques that I learned with my black pen illustration style...

8"x22" - Princess on a Pea

I have been pretty busy painting custom pieces for the past few weeks, as well as wrapping up my projects for my watercolor class.

I was in bad need of a 'just for fun' project!

I had this 8x22 "scrap" of nice 300gms Arches hot press watercolor paper that was waiting to be painted on... so I decided to revisit my little Princess on a Pea theme, this time in a larger size (the original one was 5x7), and with many more mattresses stacked on top of each other...

Thanks to the violinist, this princess is sleeping soundly through the night!
I'm working hard on completing a few other paintings - stay tuned!

Work in progress - Kirsten - Finished!

I finished another painting a few days ago. Remember the 12x14 painting of my youngest sister Kirsten, playing her Cello that I've been working on in my watercolor class? Well here it is!

I feel pleased with how it turned out. I have learned so much in my watercolor class!

8x8 color sketch - Little Friends

I finished an 8x8 color sketch today for a bigger painting I plan to paint. I'm calling it 'Little Friends.'

The big version will be painted a lot more "high key" - which means that the colors will be lighter, with more sun glare. There will also be less purple, and I plan to blur the non-essential details to help the viewer focus on the faces more...

Doesn't this make YOU want to play with pebbles, sitting in the sunshine?!
