Custom 8x10 painting - Abby in her Tutu

Abby in her Tutu

A few months back I came across a picture that Harmony took of her daughter - and instantly fell in love with the pose, the lighting, the amazing colors. With Harmony's permission I briefly visited Harmony's photograph in my Everyday Art painting from August 2. However, there is only so much detail you can capture in an ACEO-sized painting (at least when you are painting one every day and don't want to spend hours on each one with a tiny paintbrush). Needless to say, I was THRILLED when Harmony asked me to paint her a custom 8x10 of her sweet daughter.

I took a slightly different approach to this painting than I usually do. I work with a small set of about 12 professional-grade Schmincke watercolors from which I mix all my own in-between shades and hues. With watercolors you can't mix too many different colors together without getting a "muddy" color. I love bright, true colors, and so, I have developed my mixing routines that bring forth consistent results.
I like to paint the exact color I want onto the paper, rather than layering different colors on top of each other. For this painting, however, I decided to experiment a little.

Most of my paintings are either "just made up" or *inspired* by a photo. This time I decided to paint closer to the photo than usual - among other things because of the amazing colors that this photo has. Upon zooming in, I was surprised to find that little Abby's shoulders have blue and purple light reflecting off of them. The dark wooden floor really hardly has any true brown in it, but rather consists of pinks and purples and blues that reflect back at the camera.

Before adding the beautiful chocolate brown tone of Harmony's daughter's skin, I washed in some blues, pinks, purples and oranges.

Here you can see all the different colors that are "hiding" under the skin tones and wood tones of the floor. Only the tulle of the tutu was painted as the bright, pure colors I usually use.

I am quite happy with this painting. What do you think about the end result?

16x "Seconds" print give-away!!!

Are you one of those people who likes to buy the box of "seconds"- apples to make pie and apple sauce?

This evening I sorted through my art prints, and came across an envelope of "seconds" - prints from when I was still optimizing the color hues, saturation and the like. These prints are pretty, but not good enough to sell.

I really hate to just throw them away, so I decided to give them away to my readers.

Please keep in mind that these are NOT representative of the quality you will get if you purchase prints from me in my Etsy store! The prints in my store are very high quality, and I make sure that the print looks as close to the original painting as possible (...hence, I am giving these ones away for free!).

These "seconds" prints might be too light, or too low or high contrast, or a little off in the hue. I gave my kids a few of them to play with - my youngest loves lugging around 'his' print of "Meeting my Momma." I am sure the bite he took out of one corner was delicious.

Anyway, I'm going to do a give-away of 16 "seconds" prints, and you can use yours for a book mark, or whatever you choose. I will mail them in a regular envelope, not reinforced by cardboard.

Here are the prints I will be giving away (please scroll below the pictures for instructions):
I will be giving away 10 4x4 prints of this painting, minus the border. The prints turned out a little too light - the real painting as well as the prints I sell in my shop have much richer colors than these prints, but they are still pretty.

I will be giving away 1 5x7 print of this painting. It looks pretty, the hue is just a little off.

I will be giving away 1 5x7 print of this painting. The print is a tiny bit too dark, and there is minor speckling in the darker colors. The flaws are only visible if you look closely.

I will be giving away 1 5x7 print of this painting. The print looks fine, the hue is just a little off.

I will be giving away 3 5x7 prints of this painting. For some reason the printer set something wrong, so the colors came out WAY too saturated, which resulted in some red/green speckling in the face. The speckling is mostly just visible from up close.

So, now that you know what you are trying to win, here are a few ways how you can enter - please leave separate comments for each entry. The give-away will end in 10 days at midnight on October 27th.

1.) MANDATORY: follow my blog through Google Friend Connect. Leave a commenting that you follow, along with your screen name if it is different from your real name. (1 entry)

2.) "Like" my Facebook artist page and then come back here to let me know that you did. (1 entry)

3.) Check out my Etsy shop and then come back here and then leave a comment here to let me know which is your favorite painting or print. (1 entry)

4.) Purchase a print from my Etsy shop and then come back here and let me know about it. (8 entries)

5.) Leave a comment on this post about which of these prints you would like to win, and what you plan to do with it.

6.) Tell your friends about this give-away on Facebook, then tell me about it here (1 entry per day per person).

7.) Tell your friends about my Etsy shop on Facebook, then tell me about it here (2 entries per day per person)

8.) Get a friend to "like" or "follow" me, and leave a comment here who you recruited (1 entry per friend you recruited).

Have fun! I'll select 16 winning entries using on October 28.

Oct 5-8 ACEOs

The last few days have been very busy, and so I didn't have the peace of mind to sit down and plan a series. Instead, I just painted whatever the heck I felt like. Hence, these next 4 ACEOs really have almost nothing in common (except maybe the 2 little girls in profile). I hope you like them anyway!

Oct 8 ACEO - I really love how this one turned out, even if it has nothing at all to do with Fall! I got a new paint brush, and the paint DANCES onto the paper with it!

October 4 ACEO - re-do of the Sept 29 ACEO

At the beginning of the year I tried to tell myself that I would not re-do any paintings, but rather would move on. Sorry, folks, today I am guilty. I admit it. I re-painted an image... I just wasn't quite happy with the way the ACEO from Sept 29 turned out. I was painting on very rough paper, and the black pen slipped a few times.

So, here is the new version:
Oct 4 ACEO - Mommy gave you your first bottle

September 28 - October 3 ACEOs - Domestic Adoption

A wonderful Momma recently asked me to paint a few ACEOs that are more specific to domestic adoption. The difference here is that baby came into their family at birth... in international adoption, children are usually at least a few months old.

Sept 28 ACEO: Daddy gave you your first bath

Sept 29 ACEO: Mommy gave you your first bottle

Sept 30 ACEO: You loved being wrapped tightly in a blanket

Oct 1 ACEO: Mommy gave you your first kiss

Oct 2 ACEO: We were so happy when we passed court!

Siblings - Sept 22-27 ACEOs

Please excuse my long lapse in posting new paintings, life has been a little insane around here! I actually have 12 new ACEO paintings, but decided to post 6 today, and the other 6 will hopefully be up by the weekend.

I have several friends who have adopted (and as some of you may know, we are also in the process of adopting a little girl), and they keep telling funny (and not so funny) anecdotes about people asking them "if they are all yours" - this prompted me to paint a few ACEOs of some sibling groups who don't "match" but are siblings none-the-less!!!

Sept 22 ACEO - Safe in your Arms (boy)

Sept 23 ACEO - Sisters or Friends?

Sept 24 ACEO - siblings

Sept 25 ACEO - Big brother, little sister

Sept 26 ACEO - siblings

Sept 27 ACEO - Brothers or friends?

Art print give-away!

Ooooooh, have I ever been a busy bee the last couple of weeks. VERY soon I will be done with the next set of 12 little ACEOs (sorry to keep you waiting) and I am working on several bigger paintings right now, too.

In the meantime, you have the opportunity to win a free 5x7 print of your choice from my Etsy shop. Just head on over to Angie's wonderful blog The Cellar Door Stories and enter for free! The give-away will end on October 7th. So far there have only been a few entries, so there is a VERY GOOD chance that YOU could be the lucky winner!!!
